Friday 5th April

Useful information and requests:
  • On the Thursday after Easter the children are having a 'Fairy tale Castle' workshop. Please can your child dress up for the day as a Fairy tale character. If you are helping we would love you to dress  up too.
  • Things to do, to support your child...
  • In maths we have been focusing on number formation. Please continue to practise this with your child. The children particularly struggled with the formation of number 8. When we teach the children the number 5 we say "straight back, big fat tummy and a hat on the top".
  • In phonics the children have focused on the digraphs: 'or' (port), 'ur' (curl) and  'ow' (cow).
  • Mrs Roberson has done some research in to the importance of increasing children's vocabulary. Here is a link she has recommended to help your child at home. Phonics games ideas
  • Please remember to read with your child over the holiday and recap the phonemes that we have learnt so far. If children do nothing over the holidays we often find they take a step backwards in their learning.
  • Next term we will be thinking about Fairy tales. It would benefit your child if you could read some Fairy tales with them over the holidays.
  • You will find some handwriting sheets in your child's book bag. Please can you help your child practise their correct letter formation. Thank you.

Thank you for attending Celebration Assembly today. We hope you enjoyed it!

In Guided Writing this week the children have been focusing on a range of emergency vehicles. They made non-fiction books about the vehicles choosing 4 out of the 5 emergency services: fire engine, police car, ambulance, mountain rescue helicopter and Lifeboat.

In phonics the children have learnt the digraphs 'or', 'ur' and 'ow'. Please see if your child can sound and blend the following words. Perhaps they could have a go at writing them in a sentence. In order to reach the Early Learning Goal your child needs to be able to write a sentence independently with a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between the words and a full-stop at the end. The child needs to be able to read their sentence back and we also need to be able to read it. There should be evidence of key words being spelt correctly but the other words need to be phonetically plausible.
'or': horn, corn, porch, fork, storm, torch
'ur': turn, curl, fur, burn, turnip, surf
'ow': cow, crown, town, bow, down, how, now

In ChIL some of the children extended their learning by writing instructions for planting the cress seeds. They used the magnifying glasses to look at the cress. The children have enjoyed playing in the water and in the sandpit. Some of them have spent lots of time playing schools. They have also been decorating Easter eggs and playing with the construction kits. Some children have enjoyed continuing their maths learning and solving some addition problems.

We have discussed the Christian festival of Easter. We read the story and the children ate some hot cross buns and we talked about what the cross on the top means.

We hope you have a super Easter break and look forward to seeing the children on Wednesday 24th April. We can't believe the children only have one term left in Reception! The year is flying by!
