Friday 29th March

Useful information and requests:
  • Next Monday the nurse will be visiting the Robins for their health check. If there are any concerns about your child's sight or hearing you will receive a letter.
  • On Friday school ends at 2pm for the Easter holiday. There will be a Celebration Assembly at 9.15 which will then be repeated at 1.30. The children will be performing a poem in this assembly.
  • Next week we will be thinking about different types of emergency transport. If your child has any good information books or stories related to this they are welcome to bring them in.
  • On the Thursday after Easter the children are having a 'Fairy tale Castle' workshop. Please can your child dress up for the day as a Fairy tale character. If you are helping we would love you to dress  up too.
  • Things to do to support your child...
  • The children have been adding two numbers together. They used numicon to assist them or other practical apparatus. Some children were then shown how to use a number line to support their addition.
  • In phonics the children have focused on the digraphs: 'oo' (book), 'oo' (pool) and  'ar' (car).

The children thoroughly enjoyed our visit from the Harpenden Fire fighters and their fire engine. First they had a talk in the classroom and thought about who they may ask for if they had to phone 999. They learnt that there were 5 emergency services: Police, Fire, Ambulance, Mountain rescue and Coastguard. They then had a look at the fire engine and the different equipment on it. They had a chance to climb onto the fire engine and use the hose to spray water.

The fire fighters visit inspired the children to make, draw and write about fire engines and fire fighters. Some children made a fire station using construction. They were all inspired and some children have decided they would like to be a firefighter when they grow up!

The children have spent lots of time outside this week in ChIL. They have also enjoyed drawing flowers in the creative area, playing in the sandpit, using the boomwhacker instruments, playing on the bikes, doing a phoneme hunt, playing with water and they made their own cafe.

In phonics the children have focused on the digraphs 'oo' as in look, 'oo' as in spoon and 'ar'.
they could have a go at segmenting and blending the following words:
oo: book, hook, shook, cook, foot, hood, look
oo: moon, boot, food, roof, spoon, tooth
ar: car, park, harp, farm, cards, cart,

The children have been planting cress seeds in recycled milk cartons. They enjoyed doing this. We talked about how we could help the seeds to grow.

In guided writing this week the children have been working on a Mother's Day surprise! You might want to check your child's book bag in case they forget!!

In maths this week we have focused on addition. The children used numicon to help them. They found the numicon representing each number in the number sentence and then combined the two. Some children counted the holes in the numicon, some realised that they could put the largest number in their head and count on.We extended some children by encouraging them to use a number line, jumping on from the highest number.

Have a super weekend! Enjoy the sunshine.
