- Requests and reminders:
- We started 'Show and Tell' on Wednesday afternoon. The children did absolutely brilliantly. We were very pleased that some of them had clearly practised hard and knew exactly what they were talking about and had some super props to help them. Their talk needs to reflect their learning or tell us about any family traditions. For example about how they celebrated Diwali, about a Christening they have attended, it could be about Emergency Services' or an extra curricula activity they are participating in. They could bring photos and will need to practise at home so that they know what to say. Thank you in advance for your help.

- Fair trade cafe- you are invited to come to our Reception Fair trade cafe on Monday 2nd March at 9.15 am-10am. The children will be able to sit with you and have a snack and drink at the cafe and will then sing a song before you head home. If you are unable to attend, your child may bring in some money to buy something from the cafe. If you can arrange for another parent to sit with them that would be super.
- Next week we have World Book Day. The children are invited to come in dressed up on Thursday 5th March. They can come dressed as a book character or as a word. The children will be having a story teller session.
- On Friday 6th we have a special Science Day.
- Things to do...
- This week the children have been taught the digraphs 'qu', and 'ch'.
- Please remember to help your child learn their key words. It helps to stick them on post-its around the house to be read each time they walk past. You could also focus on a few and play snap or pairs with them. The children's reading improves very quickly once they are able to recognise these words. In order for children to read Yellow books they need to be reading read with fluency which means recognising the key words.
- In maths this week the children have focusing on 3d shapes. They have been naming them and describing their properties. See if your child can spot some 3d shapes in the environment.
We hope that you all had a super half term break. The children have been very good about the hand washing we are now doing very regularly at school and have taken on board that while washing their hands they should sing 'Happy Birthday' and continue washing their hands for the duration of the song.
In phonics this week we have moved on to digraphs. So far we have taught the children the digraphs 'qu' and 'ch'. The children have segmented and blended the following words and had a go at writing them.
ch: rich, chop, chips, chick, chilly, chin.
qu: quit, quack, queen, quick, quiz
In maths the children have been learning about 3d shapes. They have learnt to name a sphere, cylinder, cuboid, cube and cone. They have learnt the following rhymes:
Cube, cube what's your clue- 6 square faces all over you.
Cuboid, cuboid what's your clue?- you look like a tissue box- atchoo!
Cylinder, cylinder what's your clue?- You can stand up or roll about too
Sphere, sphere what's your clue?- You look like a ball that you kick with your shoe
Cone, cone what's your clue?- don't let your ice cream drip on you!
The children went on shape hunts and described their shapes. Please encourage your child to find 3d shapes in their environment. They also had to name shapes when given a riddle- e.g. I have 6 square faces, what am I? The children built models using a range of 3d shapes and then had to sort and count how many cuboids, cubes, spheres, cylinders and cones they had used. The children explored how the 3d shapes rolled using ramps and worked out which shape rolled the best.
In Guided Writing sessions the children have looked at the story of 'Handa's Surprise' and been writing about the animals and fruits from the story. When working with the teacher they have been thinking about simple sentences, for example : The elephant took the juicy orange. We reminded them to think about a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, finger spaces and a full stop. They use the alphabet cards to support their writing. They are encouraged to say the word, finger the word and then write the word. Some children still rely quite heavily on identifying the letters on the alphabet card. It would really help your child if you could make sure that they know what each sound looks like. One group worked independently writing a list of fruit. Another group with an adult were writing key words. One group did cutting skills and the final group did observational drawing.
During the afternoons the children have completed three activities. They have made Krispie cakes to sell at the Fair trade cafe, they have learnt about gardening in Woodland Learning. They looked at the Reception playground and have been improving the environment. They raked, weeded and tidied the flower beds and cut the lavender back. They have have been learning about parts of a plant in a Science lesson. They learnt that plants grow just like we do. They grow from a seed or bulb overtime. A plant has different parts - stem, roots, flower, seeds, leaves. They watched this clip Plants

ChIL- The children had the opportunity to write facts about the animals from Handa's Surprise and retell the story, they completed missing number line problems to 20. They played maths games. They painted animal masks and drew patterns using pastels. Outside they made obstacle courses, used the bikes and other physical activities.
