Friday 8th February

Useful information and requests:
  • It is really important that the children have a coat and hat and gloves with them everyday.
  • World Book Day-7th March.
  • Reception Fair trade Cafe: Tuesday 12th March. You are invited to come along and sit with your child and buy some fair trade food and drink from our cafe.
  • Please check your child's book bag regularly as they can become very full.
  • We are in need of some more junk modelling materials please.
  • Things to do...
  • Listen to your child read everyday. Morning time is best! Don't forget to read to your child, this helps them understand the importance of expression and they learn new vocabulary. Remember to focus on those high frequency words that have been sent home. The children need to recognise and read all 45 of them by the end of Reception.
  • Talk about ordinal numbers- 1st, 2nd, 3rd ...
  • This week the children have continued phonics focusing on letter sounds. They have learnt the sounds, 'z '  and 'zz '   See if your child can sound out and blend back the CVC words below.

We hope that you all enjoyed the Reception Assembly. We are very proud of the children - they did really well and looked fab in their costumes. They also loved sharing their Learning Journals with you.

This week ChIL has mainly focused on Chinese New Year. The children have been told the story of how each year gets its name and have had the chance to re-enact the story using small world. They have had the animals and blue fabric representing the river with the ordinal numbers that they can match. This year is the Year of the Pig and the children have been making Chinese dragons and  red money pockets. They've been painting the animals and practising some Chinese writing. The role play area has been turned into a Chinese Take-away Restaurant. The children have been using real money to buy things. They've also enjoyed dressing up.

In phonics this week we have focused on the phonemes 'z' and 'zz'
z: zip, zig-zag, zoom, zoo
zz: buzz, fuzz, jazz, fizz

We have had a quick maths session each day. This has focused on aggregation and partition. The children have been looking at clusters of objects and explaining them. For example there are 7 tulips, 4 are red and 3 are yellow or 1 has a long stem and 6 have short stems or 2 have 2 leaves and 5 have 1 leaf. The children looked at a range of pictures and explained them to the class or their learning partner.

In Woodland Learning this week the children have been making bird food. They have been practising their cutting skills using our special safety knives to cut fruit and threaded these and popcorn onto strings to hang on the trees to feed the birds.

On |Thursday afternoon, the children had a maths ChIL. All their learning had to be to do with maths.

Have a super weekend,
The Year R Team
