Friday 22nd June

Useful information and requests:

  • On Thursday 12th July the children will be visiting their new classes in the morning. It is open evening after school and you will be able to visit your child's current classroom and new classroom and have the opportunity to meet your child's new teacher.
  • On Monday we are having a visit from the dental team. They will be teaching us how to look after our teeth and how to brush them properly.
  • Please ensure that your child's Home School Liaison book is in your child's book bag at all times.
  • Things to do...
  • Phonics lessons this week have focused on the teaching of high frequency words. Please help your child learn to read and write the first 45 high frequency words.
  • This week the children have been sorting coins and making amounts with a range of denominations. Please allow your child to play with real money and encourage them to buy something in a shop.

Thank you to those of you who made it to sports day.  The weather was good and the children all really enjoyed themselves. The children particularly enjoyed watching the parents races!
The children moved around 3 areas. These were divided into the body zone, running track and circuit. The children took part in a running race and bean bag race on the track. In the circuit they took part in javelin throwing, goal shooting, shot putt, long jump and hurdles. In the body zone they had a chance to have some water and a break and complete another circuit. This included skipping, aiming, basket ball shooting, jogging and star jumps and using the hoops. The children all did really well and it all went very smoothly.

In maths this week the children have been learning about different coin denominations and sorting coins as well as making amounts using different coins. Please encourage your child to sort coins at home, make amounts and use real money in shops.

The children enjoyed going to the computer suite in the Junior School this week. They learnt how to use the mouse to click and drag. They explore the 2Simple - 2Paint a Picture program. They clicked on the paintbrush to select colour and size then clicked and dragged to make lines.

In Phonics this week we have continued to work on high frequency words, practising reading and writing of these words.

The children have been exploring the artist Monet this week and have been making their own picture based on the  lily pond in Giverny using chalk.

Some children were inspired by last week's Kandinsky work and chose to use chalks in the style of Kandinsky during ChIL.

The children have enjoyed lots of outside ChIL this week:

On Friday we had a 'Sport for Schools' workshop. We were lucky enough to have a real athlete visit us. His name is Daniel Lewis and he is a triple jumper. He started jumping when he was 15 and his best triple jump was 16.31m. He was the best in Great Britain 4 times when he was younger. He came 7th in 2014 commonwealth games when representing Jamaica (his country of birth). We had an assembly and we met Daniel and then we had a workshop in which we completed a circuit of exercises to music. In the assembly Daniel told  us the story of how he became a world class athlete and how he had to persevere, eat healthily, train hard and be focused. He demonstrated some of the moves he uses to train.

The children were all inspired and practising their long and triple jump on the playground at lunchtime.

Have a super weekend,
The Year R Team.
