  • This week the children have continued phonics focusing on individual letter sounds. They have learnt the sounds 'f'' and the greedy sounds 'ff''.  See if your child can sound out and blend back the CVC words below.

We hope that you all had a wonderful restful holiday and the children are all feeling refreshed and ready to learn!

This week the children have done some fabulous writing. They worked with an adult in a small group. They had to think about a sentence about the holidays and have a go at writing it. They were reminded at the beginning that every sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces and ends with a full stop. The children rehearsed their sentence and then sounded out each word using their phoneme fingers. Some children were able to write the sounds they needed unaided, others relied on the alphabet card in order to identify the letters.

In maths this week the children have been learning to add two numbers together.  Some children did this practically with equipment, others used dots and some recorded with numerals . Some children also practised counting on. Putting the largest number in their head first.  We challenged some children further to make the same amount in different ways using a systematic approach eg 0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5, 6 + 4, 7+ 3, 8 + 2, 9 + 1, 10 + 0.

In woodland learning the children have been thinking about Winter. They looked at some Christmas cards and brainstormed 'wintery' words. They then went on a walk and identified signs of Winter. The children used the ipads to take photographs of the environment. They came back to class and had a go at drawing the trees they had photographed.

In phonics this week the children have learnt the phonemes 'f' and 'ff'. See if your child and segment and blend the following words. They could also practise forming the letter 'f'.
f: fish, fin, fan, fed, fat, fox
ff: puff, stuff, stiff, cuff, fluff, cliff, off  (ff is a greedy phoneme and often comes at the end of a word).

In ChIL the children have started to think about our Pirates topic. The role play area is a pirate area and the children have been thinking of lots of pirate things they need. They realised they needed a ship, a plank, a sail, flags, dressing up. The ship's chef made a menu. They made a treasure box and found some treasure. They have been making things such as: flags, treasure chests, telescopes, maps. we will be continuing with our pirate theme over the next couple of weeks. They have been dressing up and having lots of fun. As it has been rather cold the children have been doing lots of physical activities outside. They've had the scooters, hoops, big bricks, stilts and we've encouraged them to keep moving! The children have also done some group weaving.

Remember pirate costumes need to be worn into school on Tuesday please!
Enjoy your weekend!
