Friday 2nd February

Thank you so much for coming to see the children's assembly on Thursday. We hope you enjoyed it. They spoke really well and we are very proud of them!

Useful information and requests:

  • Our Fairtrade café is on Thursday 1st of March. You are invited to join your child at our café to buy a fair trade drink and snack and we will sing you a song. The children will be making some chocolate krispies using fairtrade produce after half term. These will be on sale at the café.
  • After half term please could we ask that the children's PE bags have jumpers and tracksuit bottoms removed as we do not need these at the moment (we are not going outside) and they are just extra things to get lost!
  • Please ensure that all clothes are labelled as children often muddle up their clothes when they change for PE.
  • Do you have any coloured straws? If so we would love to use them to make necklaces and for other craft activities.
  • As always we will gratefully accept junk modelling, including boxes, tubes and plastic tubs such as yoghurt pots and trays. Milk carton lids are also very useful.  We are still in need of  cereal boxes too please.

Things to do...

    • Recap this weeks sounds-qu and ch
    • Read with your child
    • See if your child can use the story board below  to retell their pirate story to you.
    • Can you child tell you about the pantomime they saw this week?

The children were lucky enough to enjoy a pantomime on Wednesday. They watched Aladdin and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ask your child if they can remember the story.

This week our focus has mainly been on preparing for our class assembly with the children spending time learning their group story. Initially they acted out the story altogether and then learnt their own parts. Below are the story boards that were drawn as the children made their story up. These were then used to assist them when retelling the story. I have also written out the stories below. The children are encouraged to tell their story in their own words, adding their own detail and actions.

One stormy night a pirate ship sailed on the rough seas searching for treasure.
Captain Black beard with his peg leg, hook hand, long red coat and big bushy beard stood on the deck.
A huge gust of wind blew the treasure map out of his hand and into the wild sea.
Just then a huge wave hit the boat and the boat began to sink.
The crew had to swim for their lives
In the distance they spotted a beautiful island with golden sand.
The pirates pulled themselves ashore coughing and spluttering.
They heard the most beautiful singing and realised that they were on mermaid island.
The pirates felt sad and cross because they’d lost their map.
They spoke to the mermaids and realised that they could work as a team.
The mermaids swam out and found the map.
The pirates followed the map and found the treasure.
They all lived happily ever after .
Team work makes the dream work (Just as Tina Teamwork says).

One stormy night on a mermaid island, in the middle of the ocean far, far away there lived a nice pirate called Captain Green beard.

He had a green beard, a red hat with a green feather.

The pirate fell in love with a mermaid.

She had green eyes, black hair and a purple tail.

They went for a swim in the ocean but got lost -arhhhhhhh!

They got chased by a huge shark with sharp teeth.

They swam fast and got rescued by a pirate ship.

They were mean pirates and the captain was called captain Blackbeard.

Captain Blackbeard locked them in a basement in a cage with cobwebs all over and spiders crawling all around.

But a nice spider found the key and opened the door of the cage. They escaped and found the treasure chest.

They opened it and in the chest was a magic teapot with magic fairy dust.

They sprinkled the fairy dust and they got transported back to the island - wooooooooo.

They lived happily ever after.

There is an island in the ocean called palm tree island

On the island was a cross pirate called Captain Hook.

He had a shiny black hook with a bright red beard.

He was cross because his ship, the skull and cross bones, had sailed out to sea.

He wondered how he could get to it.

'Can I swim over the shark infested waters?'

'No, the sharks have sharp pointy teeth and would eat me!'

Out of the clouds flew his pirate parrot called Lily.

She had a huge orange beak.

Lily picked up Captain Hook with his bright red beard in her orange beak.

She flew over the snapping sharks.

They landed on the deck of the skull and cross bones.

Captain Hook was a very happy pirate.

Now he always remembers to lower the anchor.

One sunny day there was a pirate ship with a pirate flag, an anchor and a plank.

On board there were 10 kind pirates, they had pirate hats, pirate swords and pirate patches.

They wanted to find some treasure.

They sailed over the sparkling waves.

Suddenly the ship crashed into an island and all of the pirates fell off with a SPLASH!

They dived down to the bottom of the sea and saw an enormous treasure chest.

But it was too heavy for them to lift it.

First they asked the mermaid to help, but she started to sing and they had to put their fingers in their ears.

Next they threw a net overboard but the net broke.

Then they asked the fish and the sharks to help and they worked together as a team.

They lifted the heavy treasure chest onto the land.

What was inside of the chest? Was it chocolate coins? Was it necklaces or bracelets?

Was it golden crowns? Was it blue jewels? Was it spices?

When they opened the chest it was full of all of them!

Because they were kind pirates they shared the treasure and all lived happily ever after.

The children really enjoyed sharing their Learning Journal with you.

The children have continued with lots of pirate activities during ChIL this week.

In phonics this week we introduced the sounds 'qu' and 'ch'.  Focusing on reading for the first day and writing on the second day for each sound. See if your child can use their phoneme fingers or robot arms to sound out these words and their blending arm to blend them back together.

They could then have a go at writing some of these words.
qu: quit, quiz, quick, quid
ch: chick, chips, rich, chin, chop.

We also practised the formation of these letters:
q- is a curly caterpillar letter. Make a curve, up, down, down and tick
u- is a long ladder letter. Start at the top, down and curve, up, down and flick.

c- is a curly caterpillar letter. Make a curve
h- is a robot arm letter. Start at the top, down, down, bounce half way back up, over and down and flick.

On Friday afternoon the Year 1 children came to visit us and share their moving pictures that they have made in D and T. The Reception children were interested to see the flaps, spinners and sliders that the Year 1 children used in their pictures. Some of them were keen to have a go at home. We enjoyed looking at the lovely moving pictures.

Have a lovely weekend! Only one week to go until half term. We are officially half way through the school year! Where is the time going?
