Friday 25th January

Useful information and requests:
  • Please could we have some more junk for the creative area- small boxes, yogurt pots, tubes etc.   If you have any dried herbs and spices (not powder or anything very hot) that the children can use to make pirate medicines we would be very grateful for any donations.
  • It is really important that the children have a coat and hat and gloves with them everyday.
  • Important date for your diary: Reception Assembly is on February 8th.
  • World Book Day-7th March.
  • Reception Fair trade Cafe: Tuesday 12th March. You are invited to come along and sit with your child and buy some fair trade food and drink from our cafe.
  • Please check your child's book bag regularly as they can become very full.
  • Things to do...
  • Listen to your child read everyday. Morning time is best! Don't forget to read to your child, this helps them understand the importance of expression and they learn new vocabulary.
  • Play maths games.
  • This week the children have continued phonics focusing on letter sounds. They have learnt the sounds, 'j' and  'v' and the greedy sound 'ss''.  See if your child can sound out and blend back the CVC words below.
The children were very excited by the snow this week! They had lots of fun playing in it. On Monday we introduced 4 ChIL activities to motivate the children during ChIL for the rest of the week. These were: making pirate wanted posters, making a group treasure map using the playground features, 'how many ways can you make...' using gems and a play dough activity.

In maths this week the children have been combining two numbers and finding the total. They then had to record in their own way and some children bridged 10 when adding two numbers. In one session the children chose two numicon pieces and totalled them. In the other session they were using random dot patterns.

In Literacy this week the children have been writing part of the pirate story that they made up last week. They had to choose part of the story and write at least one sentence. They had to use their phonic knowledge to sound out the words and remember that each sentence starts with a capital letter, the letters sit on the line, has finger spaces and ends in a full stop.

In phonics this week the children learnt the phonemes  , ss , j and v. We are focusing on each letter for two lessons. We read in one lesson and write in the next.
ss: less, hiss, kiss, mess, boss, moss
j: jet, jump, jog, jug, Jack-in a box, jacket
v: vet, vest, van, vent,

In woodland learning the children have been thinking about birds and the 'RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch 2019' that is done every year. The children worked collaboratively to build a bird hide. So they could watch the birds without disturbing them.

Enjoy the weekend,
